Frequently Asked Questions

How Is Human Skin Color Determined?

Answer: Human skin color is primarily due to the presence of melanin, a pigment in the skin. There are two forms of melanin. People with light complexionsed skin mostly produce pheomelanin, which is red to yellow in color, while people with dark colored skin mostly produce eumelanin, which is dark brown to black.

What is hyperpigmentation and what causes it?

Answer: Hyperpigmentation is due to increased melanin production in the skin. Melasma, chloasma (skin discolorations caused by hormones), and solar lentigo ("liver spots" or "senile freckles", caused by aging and the sun) are among the frequent forms of hyperpigmentation. Besides sun exposure and hormones, skin damage such as remnants of blemishes, wounds or rashes can lead to hyperpigmentation.

What Is Riovea’s All-Natural Skin Brightening Extract and How Does It Compare with Skin Bleaching Chemicals?

Answer: Riovea’s all-natural skin brightening extract “TrioActive” was obtained from medicinal plants including neem and shikon (Lithospermum erythrorhizon). This formula does not contain any bleaching chemicals hydroquinone, arbutin or kojic acid. In laboratory tests, TrioActive showed higher efficacy than kojic acid in lowering melanin content in the skin cells. Major differences between TrioActive and skin bleaching chemicals:
1. TrioActive is all-natural, while the bleaching chemicals are synthetic.
2. While the bleaching chemicals lighten skin faster (effects seen within a week or two), TrioActive acts more slowly with results seen in about 30 days.
3. Safety concerns: bleaching chemicals based skin bleaching creams are banned (hydroquinone and mercury) or limited (kojic acid etc). Riovea’s All-Natural TrioActive provides a safe and effective alternative for skin brightening.

Can Riovea’s skin brightening products lighten liver spot and freckles?

Answer: Yes, besides brightening dull skin, Riovea’s Illuminating series products can help lighten liver spots or freckles by lowering melanin and achieve an overall more even skin tone.

Can one apply Riovea’s products to skins other than face?

Answer: Yes. Besides on face, one can use the products on other body areas such as the arm, leg and body skin.

Is the irritation normal for Illuminating Serum?

Answer: Because serum can penetrate to the more sensitive depth of your skin, it is normal to experience stinging sensation with slight blushing initially from the vitamins and antioxidants in this product. However, if prolonged itchiness and bumps develop, this product may not be the one for you.

Serum vs Cream

Answer: In general, serum is more water based and less oily compared to cream. This allows the actives to be absorbed faster and to penetrate deeper into the skin. If you want to see large results or need to fix immediate concerns, serum is the way to go.

Cream is the better moisturizer because it can form a barrier that keeps water from leaving your skin. Thus, cream is not designed to carry actives deep within the skin but to maintain the overall health and keep problems from arising. However, people with more oily skin complexion will find serum sufficient for moisturizing.

How Should I Store the Skincare Products?

Answer: We suggest customers to store all products protected from high temperature or direct sunlight.

What Does "Allergy tested, Non-irritating" mean?
